Interview | Sprinkles and Periwinkle

Welcome back to another interview!
This time I am interviewing the lovely Kirsten from www.sprinklesandperiwinkle.com, and I thoroughly enjoyed reading her wonderful answers...

Why did you start blogging?
Starting a blog has been something that I’ve wanted to do for a long time, but always found some kind of excuse not to. I am a very reserved person, and I don’t really fit in with the people around me. College was the first time in my life when I was around people who had similar interests as me, and it was a great talking to them and feeling understood. After I graduated and moved away, I started turning to the online community to share a part of myself that I don’t have a place for in my offline life. Nobody in my offline life finds beauty very interesting, and they tend to avoid writing like the plague, so I felt quite alone. Blogging gives me the feeling of belonging that is really empowering.

What are your favourite blog posts to create?
I have two favourite types of posts: the kind that I have fun actually working on, and the kind where I am especially happy with the result. I love playing with makeup and getting creative with colours, so I love working on makeup tutorials because for me it’s more fun than work! On the other hand, I want my blog to be impactful on a deeper level than just beauty, so I enjoy writing pieces that aim to inspire people to better themselves and to see the world in a different way.

What is your best blogging tip?
I definitely say it is to be yourself. I feel like people can see right through you when you are trying to sound like somebody else, or give opinions that are not truly what you believe. There are so many blogs out there these days, it can be easy to get lost in the mix, which is exactly what will happen if you try to emulate somebody else. All of us are unique and have something different to offer, and although it is scary to put your true self out there, that is what is going to make your blog stand out and grow, because nobody wants to read the basically the same blog over and over.
For me, I am blogging about beauty, but I also spent years studying literature and creative writing. It may seem a little weird to mix the two, but I feel like using the unique literary voice and storytelling strategies that I developed in college help to make my posts stand out from the crowd. It’s all about figuring out what you have that is unique and running with it.

What are your favourite blogs to read regularly?
A CUP OF JO is my favourite because she writes such a wide variety of articles on so many topics, but it is still cohesive and embodies this amazing lifestyle that I hope to one day create for myself.
When I am looking for no-nonsense beauty reviews, I head to Temptalia, because she’s just the best!

How would you describe your personality in three words?
Quiet Emotional Thinker

What is your favourite book?
It has to be Harry Potter. I have never re-read a book (series, actually) so many times.

What are your top five songs you cannot stop listening to at the moment?
Shut Up and Dance - Walk the Moon - This one really does make me want to dance… in the shower, in the car, in the grocery store…
Fight Song - Rachel Platten - I really like the message of this song. I find it very inspirational.
Overload - Life of Dillon - This is another one that makes me want to dance everywhere. I’m not even sure what this song is talking about, but I like it regardless.
Buzzcut Season - Lorde - This is what I listen to when I’m feeling artsy and poetic.
Girls Chase Boys - Ingrid Michaelson - An old favourite that I rediscovered recently and haven’t looked back.

How do you typically relax or unwind?
I’m a huge fan of cat videos; they make me happy. I also like to practice yoga, although admittedly I am not very good. But as the yogis say, it is all about the journey, and so I am trying to harness that philosophy and apply it to both my yoga practice and my blogging experience to let go of the ego associated with the destination, and just enjoy the ride. It may sound corny, but I do believe it has helped me relax and be more comfortable with myself.

What is your favourite fashion store or brand?
Forever 21 is definitely one of my favourites because you can get just about anything there for really inexpensive, and so I really enjoy shopping there without feeling too guilty. Although, I am at a point in my life when I want to feel a little more put together and less trendy, so I have been visiting J. Crew a lot to start building my big-girl wardrobe.

What Autumn/Winter fashion trend are you most looking forward to this season?
I love booties of all sorts! I wish it got cold enough where I live to wear all those cute winter coats I see on other blogs, but it is basically summer all year round here so that’s a no-go. Booties are a great way for me to get into the spirit of fall with the rest of the world without dying of heat-stroke! I love that I can wear them with just about anything. If for some reason it is absolutely freezing, (in our world, anything less that 70˚F,)  I can wear my booties with jeans and a sweater, but if it’s hot out, they go just as well with a flowy sundress as well.

What are your beauty necessities at the moment?
My anti-frizz serum has been very important as of late summer because the weather  is extremely humid and my hair likes to use that as an excuse to misbehave. I am still searching for my holy-grail serum, but right now anything is better than looking like my hair is having a raging party on top of my head.

A bold eye or a bold lip?
Usually a bold eye, sometimes a bold eye and bold lip because I’m a beauty rebel, and occasionally a bold lip. I love it all!

Is there a beauty sin you are guilty of?
Skincare; I am terrible about keeping up with a regular skincare regime. Most of the time, I don’t do anything at all; I just wash my face with whatever is there and that is the end of it. But then when I have a problem, out come the lotions, masques, spot treatments, and serums which I frantically layer on until my flakiness or acne has cleared up, then I go right back to washing my face with whatever and giving up after that. And then the cycle continues. I never learn.

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?
Realistically, probably Korea because my boyfriend and I both have heritage there. Unrealistically, the North or South Pole because I’d like to see how it feels to be at the top or bottom of the earth. Like, would my compass  or electronics go crazy?

Where do you see yourself in five years?
In 5 years I would definitely like to have a family of pets, and a career that has to do with writing. I’m not exactly sure of how that is going to play out just yet, but I’m working on it ;)
